About the National Cancer Programs
The National Cancer Program (NCP) was initiated by the Ministry of Public Health upon review of international best practices on excellent cancer care. The program, which acts as a framework that outlines the national approach for dealing with cancer in the State of Qatar, is based upon a five-year National Cancer Strategy that commenced in 2011. Its primary aims is to reduce the burden of cancer in the country, while ensuring that where cancer services are required, they are among the best in the world in facilitating improved cancer outcomes.
NCP also works on educating society about cancer through numerous high-profile awareness campaigns, emphasizing the importance of early detection. Backed by strong political commitment and ratified at the highest levels of the government, NCP strives for the provision of world class and efficient cancer care services for the State of Qatar.
About PHCC
The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) was established through Emiri decree No. 15 issued on 20th February 2012 by His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar from 1995 to 2013. As an independent corporation with its own budget, it currently operates 21 primary health care centers distributed across three regions: Central, Western and Northern. Thirteen of these centers are located in Doha, while the rest are located in populated areas.
As a provider of a wide variety of health care services, it focuses on keeping the population of Qatar healthy through preventive and community-based care, diagnosis and treatment of patients, as well as constant and long-term support to patients and their families.
About Hamad Medical Corporation
The Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has been the principal public healthcare provider in the State of Qatar for over three decades. Dedicated to delivering the safest, most effective and most compassionate care to each and every one of its patients, it manages eight hospitals, incorporating five specialist hospitals and three community hospitals.
HMC also manages the National Ambulance Service as well as home healthcare, both accredited by the Joint Commission International. While HMC continues to upgrade its facilities and services, it has also embarked on an ambitious expansion program, targeting the areas of need within the community.
About the Ministry of public health
Under the guidance of his Highness the Emir of Qatar, The Ministry Of Public Health was given the responsibility to guide reform in Qatar in order to establish one of the world’s most admired and renowned health systems. The role is to create a clear vision for the nation’s health direction, set goals and objectives for the country, design policies to achieve the vision, regulate the medical landscape, protect the public’s health, set the health research agenda, and monitor and evaluate progress towards achieving those objectives.
Another key function is oversight of the quality and effectiveness of service delivered by primary care and hospital and other public and private sector health service providers to ensure that standards are met and performance targets achieved.
The Ministry Of Public Health have a special role to play in ensuring that the public health of the country receives adequate attention. It oversees public health programs related to the control of infectious diseases, and coordinates with other agencies on environmental and public safety promotion. It has also the responsibility to ensure that the nation is prepared for any public health emergency.
In short, The Ministry Of Public Health is the steward of the health of Qatar’s people. It has the dual mandate to develop policies and programs to improve the people’s health so that they may enjoy longer and more productive lives, and to lay the foundation for a vibrant country for decades to come.
The Ministry’s goal is to vest responsibility for care in the hands of public institutions such as Hamad Medical Corporation and the private sector while regulating, monitoring, and evaluating this care against agreed upon outcomes to ensure that acceptable quality of care is provided. The Ministry is committed to establishing an environment that promotes quality and wellness through wise policies in such areas as health insurance, information technology, licensure and credentialing and continuing medical education.
